Scilla, a singular restaurant celebrates Mediterranean dining in Shanghai

Yunmi Group, an investment vehicle of Lunar Capital with focus on global luxury and lifestyle for next-generation consumers, is China’s leading F&B management company with a star-studded portfolio including  Da Vittorio Shanghai awarded two stars, The Hall by Louis Vuitton with one star, and the Michelin-selected Scilla.

As a part of the Group, Scilla is a partnership with the award-winning Chef Stefano Bacchelli. Not limited to the Italian fare he grew up with, the Executive Chef Bacchelli alongside his team is dedicated to acquainting the public with the quintessential Mediterranean dining.

Since its inception in 2023, it’s been a popular destination, for a reason that the taste of pure indulgence with Mediterranean finesse is mesmerizing. Before that, Chef Bacchelli had made his name for bringing out the best of Italian cuisine to the China market.

Housed in a three-story historical villa, it wonderfully accommodates Italian, Chinese culture and aesthetics. The smart use of Chinese-style round tables accompanied with Italy’s artisanal tableware tailor-made by Ceramiche Nicola Fasano reflects a splendid scene. And, what makes the icing on the cake is the visual art delivered by a theme on ocean, plant and sky for the three floors while fitting in with Mediterranean visual artworks.

A couple of years living in China has mellowed Chef Bacchelli in leveraging Chinese local products and influences, complemented by a higher degree of maturity in revolving around west-meets-east heritages.

To top it off, a sophisticated understanding of seasonality and diversity makes him capable of translating smooth rich, round and deep flavors with an effortless sense of style.

Spring is a flowering season of vegetables, melons and fruits in the Mediterranean coast and beyond, making an extensive use of which in the cooking, such as asparagus, green bean, broad bean, and zucchini that are added to benefit by associating together.

The starter, amberjack, overwhelms the senses with a heady Mediterranean spirit, of which the plump amberjack being lightly cured is served with succulent soft blood orange slices, shredded fennel roots, and finished with a touch of vinaigrette.

Now, making the most of Chinese seafood has proved a natural arena for his skills. Chargrill the locally sourced mantis shrimp, presented with tomatoes, and topped with garlic salad, describing a beautiful circle of umami, savoury, and sweet refreshing.

Scilla Gelato is a signature dish, not to be missed. Gelato mantecato al pistacchio, the home-made gelato giving a tap of creaminess, gentleness and moistness portrays a satisfying ending note.
