The Shanghai EDITION unveils “City in Modules”, brings art to city living

A visit to The Shanghai EDITION recently, you may find a captivating shift on the ground-floor lobby. In place of festival seasonal décor, the hotel now hosts an art installation with fresh visual and intellectual experience.

Titled “City in Modules”, the Urban Platform installation is a collaboration between The Shanghai EDITION, Swiss premium modular furniture brand USM, and Polish printmaking artist Marcin Głód. The project fuses Głód’s artistic reading of Shanghai’s urban fabric with USM’s iconic modular system.

Drawing from Shanghai’s streetscapes and daily life, Głód created a series of artworks that integrate with USM’s architectural frameworks. The installation interprets urban living through modular forms, expressing the idea that every structure within daily life is a building block of the city itself.

Głód’s visual images resonate with USM’s highly functional, design-led modular forms, building a vivid bridge between art and everyday living.

“It’s a pleasure to be part of this beautiful collaboration here at The Shanghai EDITION with USM. All the artworks are based on unique paintings and this installation is inspired by Shanghai itself,” said the artist Głód.

The unveiling of City in Modules also marked the debut of EDITION Artist’s Table in Greater China. As part of the brand’s global EDITION Artist Series, it’s a signature cultural initiative that creates a moment when artists, designers, curators, tastemakers, and our guests to exchange ideas, spark inspirations, and forge authentic connections.

Held in the hotel’s panoramic suite, the intimate evening brought together creatives from the worlds of art, culture, and food.

Co-hosted by The Shanghai EDITION and The Sanya EDITION, the dinner extended the brand’s art-driven hospitality across different city contexts. From installation to table conversation, The Shanghai EDITION continues to position itself as a place where art, culture, and urban life come as a whole.

The evening opened with an amuse-bouche by The Shanghai EDITION team, which a hairy crab tart was served with ginger vinegar sabayon and Kaluga 9-year caviar.

Echoing USM’s modular language, The Sanya EDITION presented a starter of tuna and mango cubes dressed in calamansi soy sauce, followed by a main course of Australian Wagyu beef and Shaoxing wine foie gras, composed in four strips rendered in soft blush, apricot, and green hues.

To blend Shanghai’s culinary heritage with the visual language of Głód’s artworks, the Shanghai team translated the city’s classic scallion noodle dish to scallion oil and sesame angel hair pasta with stir-fried tiger prawns.

Art remains central to EDITION’s philosophy, and across its global portfolio, the EDITION group curates collaborations with local creatives to reinforce a strong sense of place.

Singular collaborations and artworks transform hotels into living cultural environments, while the EDITION Artist Series supports regional artisans and makers, integrating creative voices into restaurants, bars, and public spaces.

Each hotel reflects the cultural and social spirit of its destination through individuality, authenticity, and creative perspective.

At The New York EDITION, hundreds of black-and-white photographs curated by Ian Schrager depicted late-20th-century cultural icons, performers, and social scenes. And in The Tokyo EDITION, collaborations with Japanese artists highlighted craftsmanship, mirroring the relations between tradition and innovation.

“At EDITION, we’ve always believed that a luxury hotel is far more than a place to stay,”said Ann Leong, Brand Management & Marketing Director for Greater China at Marriott International.

“They should serve as connecting hubs for the creative class – places where ideas meet, conversations begin, and new perspectives take shape. We are passionate about bringing art and culture, from both international and local voices into our hotels in meaningful ways,” added her.
